Talk Introduction:

Both natural and managed ecosystems have specific functions which serve to keep them balanced and growing. These functions can be studied and analyzed by many types of professionals including ecologists, biologists, chemists, physicists, and landscape designers. These functions are typically completely independent of human interventions and indeed would (and do) occur whether humans were around or not. However, some of these functions have real tangible benefits to humans beyond those benefits which are typically understood. There is an emerging body of research that is developing the methods to measure and understand these benefits, and to create an economic framework so these benefits (or services) can be included in normal day-to-day accounting and business decisions. Moreover these valuations can create new financial incentives to protect, preserve and enhance these natural systems that sustain life on earth. This talk summarizes that research and shows how those results can be applied to designed landscapes.

nEO_IMG_DSC_9783Dr. Ben Schwegler is Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist of Walt Disney Imagineering R&D. He is now the Managing Director of Disney Research CHINA. The Walt Disney Company is a diverse international entertainment company with a long-standing commitment and reputation of excellence in environmental management. Disney Research CHINA is a multidisciplinary organization of engineers, architects, scientists and other design professionals chartered to understand the interaction of the built and natural environment, and to design infrastructure and buildings to minimize their negative impacts. A unique feature of this approach is that it merges innovations in productivity for the design and construction industry with more traditional scientific discipline approaches to sustainability, such as energy efficiency, ecosystem functions and services, habitat protection, and control of air, water and soil pollution. Explicit identification of ecosystem functions and their associated services establishes the scientific and engineering basis to integrate these data as part of typical business financial models. This approach specifically enables the explicit linking of resources used in construction and operation of buildings and infrastructure to those of the “natural” environment.
